DETERMINATION: FIRST CLASS OR SOMETHING LESS

By Olawuyi Taiwo

Of course, a serious and committed student ought to strategize on how to prepare ahead to achieve excellence. One evening at exactly 6pm, I was duly challenged by close friend. He accused me of spending much time in reading. He emphasized further on not reading too much by citing some prominent scholars. They are considered to have achieved excellence in their different fields but had a poor academic background as an undergraduate, the likes of Prof. Wole Soyinka, Dele Momodu and others.
Assuredly, students often standstill because they refused to concentrate and extrapolate on what matter most to them. Later, I sat to ruminate on what my friend said and thereafter I realized some hidden truths that he doesn’t know. I realized the necessity of answering the question below honestly
“Why must we capitalize on past failures of these great scholars, forgetting their transformation along the line?”
Most times, we made reference to their failures but forget to mention their commitment and determination to achieve excellence even in the midst of failures. Besides, every one of the scholars we refer to, have different experiences and stories we can learn from. Who knows what they have encountered before being a graduate ending up with third class or a pass. It might not be their desire to graduate with such a poor grade. But due to uncontrolled circumstances which demands the necessity dilemma. However, despite all these, they struggled to transform their poor performance into excellence. And as a student we suppose to embrace their commitment and dedication making it our goal. We should also learn from their mistakes and failures.
Moreover, kudos to my response that evening, “I am only preoccupied to avoid failures”. He later concurred stating that the setbacks of others should not be our limitations but as a guide to avoid the same mistakes. However, several have also forgotten that the journey of life have different routes which lead to the same end result. If you add 3 and 5 together, you will end up getting the same answer as adding 6 and 2. So, life is dimensional in the sense that no matter our dilemma, if determined we can maneuver it. So, either first class or just a pass, I am imploring us to be more focused and stay determined despite what life might offer in its conditional status.
