YOU NEVER CAN TELL

By Olawuyi Taye Bolaji It was a glamorous day, as everything had been set for resumption because I had just been admitted to study my aspiring course (Economics) though calls have been trooping in from my fellows whom we met during the institution admission processes. All and all the waiting day appeared like the dark disappearing as daylight ascend. I began the journey with other family members, looking forward for freedom because there will be as usual less dictates. On getting to campus being my first time of getting to a serene academic environment. I was so amazed and became products of pride for my parents and now feels it is time to enjoy life (viewing the gigantic structures). Days after, I found myself in a hurry to attend a lecture, I overheard discussions between some colleaques but the most captivating of all was the statement "It is not everyone matriculated will be graduated, with all sincerity I was hijacked and asked myself how could this happen. Later, I was

A VISIT TO THE ZOO

Poem composed  By Olawuyi Taiwo A VISIT TO THE ZOO Remember, once like you Dope dreams in the past In the humid forest of the jungle Hopping from tree to tree in the past The champions of the jungle Abiding on the tree Before things fell apart Here, being caged My movement restricted Being fed with a bunch a day Threw to me Because of my fierceness They think I no longer belong They dark; am dark Why the oppression What makes the difference? Freed but caged Strolling but restricted Can fend but like a hen Oh! What a world Some revealed, some hidden Bombarded with life philosophies But deeply confused The Heaven shedding its tears The same smiling but scorning To human fierceness Some claiming cabals In the helm of affairs Are destroyers of exuberant economy Though not only in the space Annihilation it is Even in the sanctuary

THE NAKED SUN

Poem composed By Adegbenjo Oreoluwa THE NAKED SUN The sky is weeping The earth is wailing Our young men have gone bald The old ones are dying The time is running The white hair is deceiving The sun has gone naked The birds are no longer singing Still, the birds utter no sweet sound Their sweet sounds have turned into mourning The flies now go about stinging The scorching sun has dried the farm stock The rain has refused to fall Hunger is near Death is knowing Inflation has come The sun has gone naked finally

DETERMINATION: FIRST CLASS OR SOMETHING LESS

By Olawuyi Taiwo  Of course, a serious and committed student ought to strategize on how to prepare ahead to achieve excellence. One evening at exactly 6pm, I was duly challenged by close friend. He accused me of spending much time in reading. He emphasized further on not reading too much by citing some prominent scholars. They are considered to have achieved excellence in their different fields but had a poor academic background as an undergraduate, the likes of Prof. Wole Soyinka, Dele Momodu and others. Assuredly, students often standstill because they refused to concentrate and extrapolate on what matter most to them. Later, I sat to ruminate on what my friend said and thereafter I realized some hidden truths that he doesn’t know. I realized the necessity of answering the question below honestly “Why must we capitalize on past failures of these great scholars, forgetting their transformation along the line?” Most times, we made reference to their failures but forget to me

CHECK YOURSELF

By Adegbenjo Oreoluwa  So, you think she is proud. You think she is too uptight. She doesn’t really smile at you. She leaves her seat anytime you sit next to her. Oh Kay! Here is the gist – you like her but you don’t know why she acts all closed up with you. It may be that she doesn’t know how to tell you. So, maybe you should stop thinking she’s got pride in her and check yourself. The truth is girls can be very funny at times. I know you are wondering why I have to check myself; it’s not as if she is the only girl in the world. Definitely, I’ll find someone who will like me for who I am… I agree but here are some questions you really do need to ask yourself bruh Do I like myself now?  Does my look satisfy me? Does my personality chase away people or bring people to me? Do I really like this girl enough to work on myself? If your answer is NO to questions one and two and YES to questions three and four. Then dear brother you need to read on. If you still feel you don

COPING WITH FAILURES

By Oluwaseun Atejioye Everyone wants to be successful. I have never met anyone who purposely set out to be a failure. Undoubtedly, this is why so much has been written on the topic, “How to be Successful.” But most of us tend to forget the significance of failure in the process of being successful. We need to realize that without failure we would be less capable of compassion, empathy, kindness and great achievement. We would be less likely to reach for the moon and stars. We would always make the sky our limit instead of the sky to be our starting point. Failure is inevitable in life. Failure is a necessary part of life. Denis Wantley once said that, “Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” And what is the point of being alive if you don’t at least try to do something remarkable. Job 14:1 says, “Man that is

PROCRASTINATION: NOW OR NEVER

By Olawuyi Taiwo I looked at my wrist watch, it was already 10pm prompt, I was puzzled and immediately I know it was all my fault. I should have done it before. Students of nowadays find it highly reluctant to accept the fact that today’s activities determines the success or failure of tomorrow. Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. It is an element that steal someone’s time away, often and most of the time it makes dream to be unrealizable. It is a non-focused devilish act to experience failure in life. You have an assignment to submit in two days’ time but instead of doing such assignment before the deadline expire, you prefer to do it at the rushing hour. Do you know what you have missed because of postponing and postponing till that moment you are meant to submit, it is really a devilish act just for an individual not to succeed. It is an act that could lead to feelings of inadequacy, guilt, self-doubt and depression. Procrastinatio

IMPACT OF HOSTEL LIFE ON STUDENTS

By Oluwaseun Atejioye  There has always been a debate on whether the life in primary and secondary schools are more interesting and fun compare to that of higher education. I won’t be stating in this article that one is more interesting than the other. This article is targeted at undergraduate students. Being an undergraduate is not an easy task. One of the most important and necessary factor you need to put into consideration as an undergraduate is where to live. An individual have the options of either living off-campus or in hostels on the campus. Generally we can at one point or the other be influenced positively or negatively by the kind of life put up in the hostels. Some of the impact of hostel life on students are discussed below.  The very first thing that is common in hostel is the use of unconventional languages i.e. hostel slangs. I was carried away recently while talking with my mum, she was like,” Seun, you need to refill the gas” and my reply was, “All the best for

COPING WITH YOUR ROOMMATES

By Oluwaseun Atejioye To live with individuals in a roommate condition can be a difficult task. Sometimes you can work out your disparities, and on different occasion you can’t. I’ve had so many roommates over the years: individuals that I’m still friends with, individuals that I’m indirectly cordially with and individuals with whom I would stay away from if at all possible. However, regardless of what number of individuals you’ve lived with, devising a means of how to manage and deal with roommates can simply be a major task. You may have constantly found yourself in appalling circumstances with your roommates and likewise during good moments too. Perhaps it is your inconsiderate roommates that continually woke you up around two in the morning, or you have been on the queue to fetch water and finally you have the water, you drop the container with water in your room and quickly went out to get something, on returning to use the water for a dire task, the container is already empty

GIVING UP NEGATIVITY: NEGATIVE THINKING, NEGATIVE SELF-TALK AND NEGATIVE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE

By Adegbenjo Oreoluwa  Have you ever wondered how great the world would be if she doesn't have negativity wrapped around her? Have you ever thought about how easy and prosperous your life would be if you give up negativity in every area of your life?  Most times, we have questions that pop into our brains that make us lose sleep and appetite and then at the end of the day, it affects us health wise. That is why most students tend to have psychological problems and then we hear that they've been hospitalized. Although we tend to attach psychological traumas of students with reading too much for examinations or tests but really, we need to think along the line of having too much negativity around us as students and try to give up negative thinking, negative self-talk and most especially negative people in our lives.  There is a saying that if you have negative people around you, you tend to think negatively and then finally produce negativity all the time. What I have foun
